🐎 Horseback Riding at 1000 Acres

How does horseback riding work at 1000 Acres?

Horseback riding is one of our signature experiences! Each trail ride is staff-guided, with a wrangler leading the group and additional wranglers spaced throughout the line for safety. Horses follow a nose-to-tail formation along scenic mountain, river, and forest trails.

Is horseback riding included in my stay?

  •  Yes! Every guest receives one trail ride per overnight stay included in their package. If you’d like additional rides, they are available for an extra fee and can be reserved in advance or on-site (subject to availability).

Are the rides staff-guided?

Yes — all trail rides are guided by our experienced barn staff to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience

Are there rides for different skill levels?

 Yes!

  • Beginner Walk Rides: Perfect for first-timers and casual riders.
  • Intermediate Trot Rides: For those with some riding experience.

Advanced Lope Rides: For experienced riders only (must pass a barn assessment).

Is there an age or height requirement?

 Yes:

  • Riders must be at least 7 years old and at least 48 inches tall for trail rides.

Younger children can enjoy barnyard rides (hand-led rides at the barn).

Is there a weight limit for riding?

We have a 240-pound weight limit for horseback riding to ensure the safety of both horse and rider. However, exceptions may be made for experienced riders with proportionate height and weight, at the discretion of the barn manager.

Do riders have to pass an assessment?

Yes — for anything more advanced than a walk ride (such as trotting or loping), a riding assessment is required to confirm safety and skill level.

What upgraded horseback riding experiences are available?

We offer several premium experiences for an additional fee:

  • Picnic Ride: 2-hour ride with a 30-minute stopover for lunch in the mountains.
  • River Crossing Ride: 3-hour advanced ride (ages 16+ only; experienced riders).
  • Extended Trail Ride: 2-hour scenic adventure ride.

Cattle Sorting Experience: 1-hour ranching experience moving cattle (ages 14+ and experience required).

Can guests bring their own horses?

Not at this time — we currently provide all horses for trail rides and activities.

Do you provide helmets for riding?

Yes! Helmets are provided and must be worn by all riders under the age of 18. Helmets are optional for adults but highly recommended.

What should I wear for horseback riding?

We recommend wearing long pants and closed-toe shoes or boots. No sandals or open-toe shoes are allowed on rides. It’s also a good idea to bring a jacket for cooler days

Can beginners go on trail rides?

Absolutely! We welcome riders of all skill levels. Our beginner walk rides are perfect for first-time riders or those wanting a relaxed trail experience.

What happens if bad weather affects rides?

Horseback riding may be postponed or canceled in cases of thunder, lightning, dangerously high winds, extreme heat, or cold temperatures. Safety is always our top priority

How are riding schedules handled?

Riding schedules are posted nightly at dinner for the following day. Riders are prescheduled based on skill level and availability.
